8 Skin Care Travel Tips
The holidays are in full swing and we know what that means… Travel season! Which is definitely a good thing because by the end of the year we all need a breather. However it can unfortunately be a downer with respect to your skin. Air travel, different weather, inconsistent nutrition, and stress can wreak havoc on your skin. Plus, we are typically off of our normal schedule during the holidays, which makes it tough to stick with our usual smooth-sailing skin care routines. Don’t fear though, we are here to help you prepare to prevent your skin from suffering the consequences with these 8 skin care travel tips.
1.) Invest in travel size.
Target, Walmart, and most other grocery stores offer a variety of travel size health as well as beauty products. Don’t use these! Instead, purchase empty miniature bottles and fill them with your usual product. This prevents your skin being thrown out of whack due to using a product that is not a fit for your skin! Also, at Clinically Clear we offer sample sizes which are ideal for travel as well – save these containers or ask us for new ones. We don’t charge our clients for these because we want to help you maintain the weekly schedule we created specifically for you. All while not having to worry about getting through airport security or how you will fit everything in your bag! Bonus tip: soak cotton rounds with your toner and store these in a tiny (sandwich-sized) resealable plastic bag… this will get you through several days of skin care travel if you make sure to keep the bag sealed.
2.) Cleanse and cleanse again.
This tip is one that you take with you in your day-to-day life, not just during travel season. It is crucial that you remember it while you are out of town as well though. You should always have your skin’s best interest in mind and double cleanse. Always use a mild pre-cleanser that is safe on your eyes so it can double as eye makeup remover too. You need to take some sort of action before to remove that top layer of grime you obtained during the day before you use your actual cleanser. This clears the decks to allow your “active ingredients” cleanser to better penetrate your skin and will save you in the long run.
3.) Don’t reinvent the wheel.
Tying in with number two, do not feel like you have to completely change your skin care travel routine because you are going to be somewhere new. You should maintain what you have been doing with the tried and true products you are using while you are at home. If you are concerned with what a change in the weather may do for your skin, schedule a complimentary consultation with Clinically Clear Atlanta. Our team of trained acne specialists can assist in what you should do differently, if anything, to make sure your trip goes, and your skin stays smooth.
4.) All the H2O please.
Did you know that the typical relative humidity on an airplane cabin is only 20%? This is only slightly higher than a desert and much, much lower than the 30%-50% in most of our homes. The point is: if you’re traveling by air at all, especially to a cooler climate, know that your skin will require extra hydration. Definitely keep a moisturizer in your routine and use it more frequently beginning a day or so before you board that airplane. However, it is equally as important to hydrate from the inside out as well. And that means drink a lot of water. It is recommended that you drink a minimum of half your body weight in ounces every single day. Another recommendation if you drink a lot of water but still face dried lips (hint: this means you are dehydrated) is to invest in other options for hydration! This includes coconut water, or electrolyte rich sports drinks – preferably those that are not high in sugar content and contain natural ingredients.
5.) SPF is your BFF.
When I think about the relationship you should have with your SPF a particular few lines from Dr. Seuss comes to mind. Green Eggs and Ham to be more specific, with talk of houses, boxes and even trains. You should be wearing your sunscreen E-V-E-R-Y-W-H-E-R-E during daylight hours. On a plane, on a train, in a house with a mouse. Your skin is with you your entire life – adapting and changing over the years based on how well you maintain it. SPF should be your number one defense at the start of and throughout your day. Regardless of if it is your travel day and you will only be on a plane, or if the weather where you are headed is snowy.
6.) Look but don’t touch.
You already know to avoid touching your face due to the fact excess oil causes a pimple. If you do not, check out more info here. This is a friendly reminder to maintain this practice especially while traveling. You are coming in contact with so many various types of unknown germs and bacteria. Mixing that with your skin is a leading cause for a breakout. Wash your hands frequently and keep them away from your face!
7.) Less is more.
It is so tempting to be over-the-top when vacationing. This is also the case with how we maintain our skin. Who knows what our reasons are, either way none of us can judge because we all are guilty of it. Every single person wants that vacation glow. What you should not do is layer up in product or even makeup in order to obtain this. That will essentially suffocate your skin, and when oxygen cannot get to your pores is when acne likes to pop up. Give your skin the opportunity to breathe – be a makeup minimalist. Your skin will thank you.
8.) Work smarter not harder.
Traveling can be stressful. One way to make things easier on yourself is investing in the appropriate skin care products before you go. Rather than using the hotel’s bar soap to clean your face, bring along your first-step cleanser. This is an easy way to remove that initial layer of makeup or grime. These can also be transported with you wherever you go. Please note this should not be your main line of defense in cleaning your skin. You should most definitely also use a cleanser at least twice a day. Once in the morning before you start your day and once in the evening before you go to bed. Nonetheless, don’t make things harder on yourself than they need to be. You are vacationing, after all.
